  • Government recognition for Fero January 25, 2012 Fero Group is doing its bit for the community when it comes to training staff. Fero was recently praised by the Western Australian Government for its involvement in the apprenticeship scheme. Minister for Energy; Training and Workforce Development; Indigenous Affairs Peter Collier MLC congratulated Fero. “By participating in the apprenticeship system, you are providing your new employees with the opportunity to learn new skills and to attain a nationally recognised qualification. You are also expanding the pool of trained people within your industry and contributing toward the economic future of our State,” he said. Fero Group Human Resources Manager Alex Brown said three apprentices were working in the factory and two trainees were working in the office. The apprentices are across the three divisions while one trainee is working in HR and the other in business administration. “One of the apprentices is an electrician and two others are completing their qualification in mechanical trades and are soon to graduate,” Ms Brown said. “The trainees are new employees who are working in business administration.” The apprenticeships and traineeships are positive steps for Fero, Ms Brown said. “Now more than ever we need to invest in apprenticeships in particular. It’s not just because of the skills shortage but a responsibility for our company to be at the forefront of development in the industry. “Apprenticeships are hard to find for many people so we are happy to be doing our part. “We’ve always found that people who do apprenticeships with us stay for long periods and they are very well trained,” she said. “Recognition from the Government for our efforts is greatly appreciated.” Government Letterread more

  • Sam Griffiths presents to AJM Conference November 24, 2011 Sam Griffiths, Sales Manager Fero Reinforcing, made a presentation at the recent AJM Securing Local Content in Major Resources Projects Conference in Perth. Sam (pictured) made his presentation in regard to the large civil and industrial projects, particularly in Queensland and Western Australia for LNG, Iron and other minerals. Key issues facing local suppliers and fabricators: 1.       Increased global competitiveness and involvement in local (major) projects 2.       High local raw material pricing and the challenge of justifying price premiums to head contractors 3.       Government policy lacking in pressure for off-shore developers and contractors to invest locally through suppliers and manufacturers 4.       Developments managed through EPCM models basing assessment on lowest front-end prices, rather than EPC models whereby turn-key solutions and project price certainty allows for suppliers to be more accountable for delivery of materials on-time and within set pricing. 5.       Only a basic framework for the connection between local industry and offshore developers/contractors exists particularly in new greenfields areas. Key solutions for industry to embrace 1.       Development of latest technology plant and machinery focusing on efficiency, safety, environmental and product quality 2.       Alignment of supplier services to the needs for projects and maintaining flexibility in service provision 3.       Continued lobbying to incorporate local involvement plans at the approval stage of major projects 4.       Increase capabilities through vertical or horizontal integration or through partnerships with associated service providers 5.       Alignment of HSE and QA to be in line with world standards What Fero has done 1.       Investment of $26m state-of-the-art galvanising facility in Brisbane and similar planned investment on upgrading Kewdale facility 2.       Continual product development through client feedback and industry education on product design and service provisions, particularly looking at the strata exporting services, and integrated dome washer and pull collar 3.       Following projects from early discussions and approval stages and creating relationships with EPCM contractors prior to release of construction or fabrication contracts 4.       Management of prefabrication, freight, galvanising, hold-down bolts and cast in items for reinforcing steel projects. Management of export services, on-site and off-site product testing, new product development and product improvements with Strata customers 5.       Increased certifications of Environmental, Safety, Quality and Product-specific (ie ACRS) standards Conference website: http://www.informa.com.au/conferences/mining/operations/securing-local-content-in-major-resources-projectsread more
